No fewer than 13 people killed and ninety-eight injured in rail accident in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine what caused this incident,” declared the national leader.

The president reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The development of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a significant growth of its duties in public infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid rate, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled significant questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition called for an immediate suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This halt was suggested pending a full technical review. The party stated that the situation "requires swift accountability."

In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and running of these strategic projects.
