In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The late summer uprising was sparked by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the nation's established political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Government Consultations Underway

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several leading political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
