Administration officials confirmed the start of government employee layoffs on the end of the week, making good on earlier warnings linked to the continuing US government shutdown, which is set to extend into its third consecutive week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

Russell Vought posted on social media that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the official procedure for terminating staff.

Although Vought did not specify which agencies were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that notices had been issued within that agency. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson indicated that staff reductions would take place at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a labor organization for federal workers announced that members at the Education Department would be affected by the reduction in force.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Union leaders warned that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on services used by millions of Americans and vowed to challenge the moves in the legal system.
